More than “just an artist” explores the hidden skills behind artistic practice and seeks to challenge perceptions about the working life of artists.
It is a collaboration with multi-disciplinary artist Kay Abude and photographer Steffen Pedersen, and stems from Wildcard Collective’s ongoing work to develop tools to support individuals right across the creative ecosystem to build sustainable careers.
Currently in early development, the project will start with a dedicated coaching program for artists working across a range of art forms and disciplines in Melbourne and regional Victoria. The coaching program will support each artist to reflect on their artistic practice and uncover the hidden skills behind their creative work.
In collaboration with Kay Abude and Steffen Pedersen, whose own practices both explore and document “work” through different perspectives, we will develop a body of work that brings to life the stories of each artist, their practice and the skills behind their work.
The project will culminate in a touring exhibition, workshop program and public awareness campaign that celebrates the hidden skills of artists.
At a time when artists, and the arts as a sector, are facing significant challenges this project presents a new way to look at and the value of the arts - as the foundation of 21st century skills as well as artistic outcomes.
